New Pattern - The Mosaic Scarf

​The Mosaic Scarf came about this summer as I was staring at 6 Skeins of Rainbow colored yarn by Stylecraft called Carnival. Over the winter of last season, a parent at my daughters school whom I’m friendly with, Rachael asked if I could make this gorgeous chunky scarf in rainbow colors. I tried really hard to find the yarn for this project. We finally found this Stylecraft yarn touted as chunky but when it came, it was really just an Aran yarn. There possibly could have been something lost in translation of this British Company. So here I was 6 months later still staring at this special order yarn and had absolutely no idea what to make. I then saw a wonderful Herringbone Pattern done with Diana yarn in Malabrigo and thought to myself, look at those short Stitches and how that picks up the color change of the yarn. I had worked with the Linen Stitch before on my Ombré Wrap and Thatch Poncho, and thought those interlocking Stitches could be perfect for this yarn. 

After I finished up the Rainbow one, I started making them in blues and greens. I ordered all the various colors to try and then as we got closer to the opening of the fall season, they discontinued the yarn!!! I was crushed. Then I remembered that Malabrigo Scarf and thought their yarn would be perfect, and with my yarn shop opening, what better way to showcase the yarn I sell!

What I love about the Linen Stitch (sometimes called the Moss Stitch, Seed Stitch or Granite Stitch) is that it can be worked a couple ways. In this pattern you’re going to stay close to the right hand stitch when working in between the Stitches. This makes your Stitches lay straight in the middle of the gap. Working towards the left side of the gap would create more of a diagonal pattern. Of course you can experiment with either side of the space to see which version of this stitch you prefer but to make this look like my photo you need to hug the right side of that space.

Materials

2 Skeins Malabrigo Rios (or any worsted 4 yarn) pictured here in Aniversario sold at Staci’s Stitches & Skeins
I Hook 5.50 mm

Stitches used; Single Crochet, slip stitch and chain
Abbreviations;
Ch - chain
Sc - single crochet
Level: Beginner

Ch 220. Take your long chain and smooth out flat to make sure the whole chain is facing the same way and it is not twisted. Then slip stitch ends together.

Row 1 - Ch 1, skip 1st chain and sc in next creating a gap in between your Stitches . Ch1 skip next chain and single crochet into next. Repeat this across all 220 chains until you reach the end of the row. There should be a gap in between all of your Stitches. At the end of the row instead of slip stitching you will work your first stitch of Row 2 in the first open space of Row 1. Filling in those Gaps.

Row 2 - working in the gaps between the Stitches of the previous Row and staying to the right side of the stitch; sc in each chain 1 space from the previous row and ch 1. Repeat.

Rows 3 - End. Keep repeating row 2 until the end of your second skein and you have 6 inches of yarn left. Slip stitch your last two Stitches and weave in ends.
